Tom Truex, candidate for BREC Chair
If you are receiving this post, you probably know I am running for Chairman of the Broward Republican Executive Committee (BREC). I’ve been a member of BREC for about 10 years, so I know many of you well. But here’s some information about my background for the BREC members who I don’t know as well.
First of all, I’ve been active in our community for a long time. My family moved to Broward from Indiana in 1971. I graduated from Miramar High School in 1976. I graduated from the University of Miami in 1979, and received my law degree from the University of Florida in 1981. My wife, Janet, and I were married in a Davie church in 1984. Our four daughters have attended Broward County public schools. One is a graduate of the University of Florida, and two others currently attend there. Our youngest attends public school here in Broward County. I am a small business owner, having run my law practice here in Broward, since 1985.
I never planned to run for political office, but in 1995, a series of unfortunate choices by politicians in the Town of Davie, compelled me to run. And I haven’t stopped since. Motivated to run for Mayor, I spent two years attending every Council meeting and involving myself in numerous advisory boards. I published an online and print journal, called “The Davie Review and Cyberspace Journal,” starting in August 1998. Scraps of those newsletters still litter the Internet. My first run for Mayor in 2000 was not a winner, but I learned a lot. Subsequently I was elected to the Town Council, then Mayor twice.
That time in my life–now over a decade–has led me to continuously actively support local GOP clubs, candidates, and BREC. I am ideally suited, both in experience and temperament, to help newcomers become active, informed republicans, and to help them run campaigns for elected office. And I am committed to helping our incumbents retain their seats.
