Retail Roundup: Debuts of ‘Dueling water coaster,’ Danish furniture store, and golf club fitter studio
Rapids Waterpark in Riviera Beach is debuting Mega Mayhem — a new attraction it calls the longest dueling water coaster of its kind in North America, and the only one in Florida. What’s a dueling water coaster, you ask? Well, the coaster part is easy. It’s like a roller coaster but instead of rolling on wheels, water-propelled participants slide through the ride. Mega Mayhem, the largest attraction ever built at 45-year-old Rapids Waterpark in Riviera Beach, is billed as a dueling water... Read More
Weekend things to do: Florida Derby fashion, a great Cure tribute band in Delray Beach, NSYNC vs. Backstreet at Broward Center
Serious question: What does one wear to the Florida Derby? The thoroughbred race, known more formally as the Curlin Florida Derby, returns to Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach on Saturday, and I’m flummoxed (not to be confused with the racehorse of the same name). I am familiar with the fashionable crowds that attend the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, sartorially splendid and seersuckered, feathery wide-brimmed hats at a rakish angle. Surely the Florida Derby — the... Read More
MAP: Where Trump won big in Broward — and where he performed poorly
With all his opponents having dropped out, former President Donald Trump won every city in Broward in Florida’s presidential primary, though he didn’t perform quite as well as he did in the rest of the state. And the Republican votes in the county’s cities and towns weren’t uniform. Some communities provided him a much larger share of the vote than the 79.8% he received countywide, and others much less. There was a swath of Trump support in the southwest part of Broward — Miramar,... Read More

Federal judges uphold DeSantis’ redistricting plan
TALLAHASSEE — A three-judge federal panel Wednesday rejected a constitutional challenge to a congressional redistricting plan that Gov. Ron DeSantis pushed through the Legislature in 2022, saying opponents did not prove lawmakers acted with “racially discriminatory purpose.” The decision was the second time in less than four months that courts have upheld the map in cases focused on the overhaul of a North Florida district that in the past elected a Black Democrat. The state’s 1st... Read More
Coral Springs man convicted in 2011 murder of restaurant worker
A Coral Springs man was found guilty Wednesday of the 2011 killing of a restaurant worker whose body was surrounded by enough blood for investigators to piece together who committed the offense. Kadian Andre Garfield Roper, 43, will learn his fate May 1, when Broward Circuit Judge Tim Bailey imposes his sentence. Life in prison is possible but not mandatory for the second-degree murder conviction. Bailey ordered a pre-sentencing investigation to determine the fairest possible sentence. Roper... Read More
